Oakley, Chicago, IL Bike Ride and Forest Preserve Clean Up at Whistler Woods08/22/2009 - 9:15am 08/22/2009 - 12:00pm Join us for bike ride and nature clean up at Whistler Woods Forest Preserve on the South side. Bike from the Memorial Park field house in Blue Island to the trail head of the Major Taylor trail and back. The ride from Blue Island to Riverdale is about 7.5 miles round trip; the pace will be about 12 mph. Meet at the Memorial Park field house (12800 S. Highland Ave, Blue Island, IL). Blue Island is easily accessible via both the Metra Electric and Metra Rock Island train lines, as well as both PACE and CTA buses. You can also take the Red line to 87th Street, and ride east to Vincennes to get to town. Come join this hysterical outing of over 500 kids on bikes taking over the streets of Blue Island. We need adult chaperones, the funkier the bike the better. Children are welcome. Ride length: between 5 and 15 miles, mostly at a slow pace. Join us for Beggars Pizza after the ride (about $3/person). Helmets mandatory. Lake Shore Drive Tinley Creek Trail ride07/26/2008 - 10:00am 07/26/2008 - 12:00pm Come join us for a ride through the beautiful forest preserve of Tinley Creek on the far south side. The ride goes through mature oak-hickory forest as well as some short grass prairie acreage. Much of the ride is in the shade which is nice during the heat of summer. Seemingly miraculously, this ride feels like it's 95% downhill, even though you end up where you start! Meet at Rubio Woods (143rd/Midlothian Turnpike, about 1/2 mile E. of Harlem Ave.) at 10 am. Bring water. (There are pumps at a couple of f.P. shelters in the area). You might want to bring sunscreen and bug repellent, if those are issues for you. Binoculars might be worth bringing as well, if you are into birding. Ice Cream Social Family Ride06/07/2008 - 6:00pm Ride the Lakefront as well as some interesting areas on the near S. side of the city. This is a family friendly outing, so plan on slow speeds and negotiating around kids, although everyone is welcome. The route length will be determined by the abilities of the ride participants, but plan on roughly 6 miles. Finish at Navy Pier (Haagen Daz ice cream parlor). There are free fireworks at 10:15pm. All participants should have a helmet and lights on their bikes. Safety vests are encouraged. Meet at the foot of the main steps of the Shedd Aquarium (W. side of museum) at 6 pm. There are many public transportation options (Metra train, CTA buses and the L). Parking is available on Solidarity Drive for $1/hour (meters; bring quarters), or you can choose to park in the garage at Navy Pier and roll to the ride start (plan on 30 min. to get there). We will be riding from the Chicago Cultural Center on the corner of Randolph and Michigan to Forest Park, IL. Forest Park is a charming suburb near Oak Park that combines an historic downtown, quaint and quirky shops, and affordable dining options. A highlight will be shopping at Todd and Holland fine tea purveyors. Meet at Intelligentsia Coffee, right next door to the Chicago Cultural Center (N. side of building), on Randolph and Michigan.
